Understanding your Knee Pain

Pain in the front of your knee? We can help 🤝

Anterior knee pain is a common presentation at our two Brisbane Physiotherapy clinics.

Common conditions we see are:
- Patellofemoral pain
- Patella / Quadriceps tendinopathy
- Patellofemoral instability
- Fat pad impingement
- Bursitis
- Stress fracture
- Osgood-Schlatter lesion in adolescents

These conditions affect many structures, each of which can influence pain. These structures include: joints (particularly patellofemoral joint), ligaments, muscles, tendons, Hoffa’s fat pad, bursa and the ITB.

Did you know that the type of training you do can contribute to your pain? Training on stairs/hills can increase the load going through the front of your knee. Increased volume and intensity can also lead to overuse injuries in this area. Training surface and footwear are important considerations, too.

There are a number of intrinsic factors that can predispose you to injury. This includes: increased femoral internal rotation (squinting patellae), increased knee valgus (with increased Q-angle), increased tibial rotation and increased subtalar pronation (flat feet).

Through musculoskeletal assessment with a physiotherapist can help to determine the source and cause of your pain. This can typically be done without any imaging. This allows us to build you individualised rehabilitation programs to improve your biomechanics.
