Tips on starting exercise

The mental and physical benefits of exercise are well established. Despite this, many people remain inactive which can lead to a great number of chronic health conditions.

Everyone can exercise. When there are complex underlying health conditions, it may take a skilled practitioner to help you get started.

Understanding your health history, undergoing a physical examination, establishing lifestyle goals and gauging activity interests are important parts of the pre-exercise evaluation process.

This can be done by your GP, Physician, Nurse, Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist or other allied health practitioner. In many cases, it can be done in combination by your treating health team.

If you have a chronic health condition, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates under a GP Management Care Plan (formerly an EPC) and/or Team Care arrangement. Speak to your GP about your eligibility.

Work with your health team to find a safe form of exercise that challenges you. Make sure it’s something you enjoy - don’t do something that feels like a chore.

Is joining a gym is a little overwhelming? Not sure where to start? Book in online to see a Physiotherapist.
